What do I put in the collection box?

I have 2 gems, a needle, and have found the castle. I gather I am supposed to put something in the collection box, but have tried everything in my inventory, and cannot find anything else to donate. I don't like reading walkthroughs, because they make me feel cheap. Can I have a hint? I like Erpy's hint style.

Hmmm... Then I'm kinda stuck. I gather I should talk to the monk, but he won't talk to me. What's my next course of action?
